Active map of the Head Street excavationsThe Head Street site as it appeared on on 23rd June 2000. Parts of the following image are active: selecting them will lead you to information about that part of the grave. If you are using a web browser with appropriate JavaScript support (e.g., recent versions of Internet Explorer or Netscape), descriptive boxes will pop up as you move the cursor above links.
All the pits and trenches you can see are old pits and trenches re-excavated. The process of excavation is to work backwards in time, removing the latest features first so as to leave what survives of the earlier periods. At this stage in the excavation, we are still removing the post-Roman features. The earliest of these are of Norman date and are trenches ('robber trenches') dug to recover the stone in the Roman foundations. Otherwise there is little of medieval date: most of the pits are 17th century or later. In case you can't find the links in the image, they are listed below. |
